Aim for a popular but dying product, replicate and then enhance slightly and you’ve got a truly winning formula. Spark has taken many visual cues from other applications and I think that the developers at Readdle have really targetted Inbox perfectly. Rather than the tabbed view that - I actually quite like - you find in Gmail, the list view is much easier to quite glance at but not all emails are shown.īecause you don’t see a massive list, you feel less inundated with information and once your brain gets used to this layout, like Inbox, you can find what you’re looking for much more easily. Like Inbox, the bundling of emails into pre-determined segments really helps you feel like you’re getting control of each type of email you receive - from promotions to newsletters. Which is as you’d expect in all honesty, but it feels much more cohesive and as they are completely separate, you feel as though your email client is doing much of the legwork with regard to overall organisation. Everything feels very organized and well thought through. Your notifications are bundled much as they would be with Inbox. Instantly when firing up Spark you notice that the interface doesn’t feel quite the same as every generic email client, but for Inbox users, it will feel eerily familiar. The reason being: it appeals to the Inbox devotee and has a suite of similar features - plus a few more on top to boot. Inbox’s demise means if you are a fan, then you’re essentially perfect fodder for Spark for Android. Google’s recent track record with killing off popular services is no doubt a concern for many of the ‘currently available’ products besides the core options - and that does include Gmail.

I like that Newton is even more minimal and has options on all platforms (it has a Windows app too). I’m either going to use this or Newton going forward, but haven’t made up my own mind yet. I think it’s clear that these developers are fully behind the Android version. Since beginning my testing, Spark has received at least two updates to speed things up in a number of areas and address bugs. I’ve been using the Android beta for a few days and have found it to be a solid start too.

I’ve used the Mac version off and on for at least a year now and do enjoy it. Should you use Spark? Depends on what you need in an email experience. Spark also lets you limit notifications, so you can set it to only notify you of important emails.
You can separate email into a Smart inbox that breaks out received emails by Personal, Pins, Newsletter, and then everything else, or go with a traditional list. What is Spark Mail? It’s a smart email app with some of the features you’ll find in Inbox, but yet Spark has its own unique take on how you should manage your day. The popular iOS and Mac email app has been released on Android for all to use. If you have been waiting for Spark Mail before making a switch, the time has now come. Google’s Inbox dies today, so you really do need to find a replacement if you haven’t already.
